DVD and bluray cases don't have any weird reactions to it, in my experience though I did have issues the first few times when I left the goo gone on overnight. Some things I learned were to always test on new surfaces that you've never worked with before. I still have trouble with stickers that are more plasticy, but paper stickers usually come right off once you soak them a little bit.
The used stuff is usually smaller, indie or other hard to find things or out of print titles, especially old DVDs, stuff like OOP horror or sci fi, made for tv movies, etc. I will say this, we buy a ton of new stuff. Yes, I love pristine packages because it makes for less work, but I also like making a crappy dvd or bluray look 100 times better with a few swipes of Goo Gone, reprinted artwork or a newer case. I also have become quite good at removing stickers and sticker residue, removing permanent marker from disks and packaging, and other "fun" clean up procedures. Not great, but okay, and worth it to assuage my husband's issues with dented, dinged and broken cases. My husband has tried a few places online and we have gotten dvd, bluray, 4k and criterion style cases for okay prices. When we have gotten things with broken cases, either new and shipped poorly or just used and unavailable in our area so we are forced to buy online, we just buy cases. There is a really great local chain of stores that have multiple copies (usually) of used movies, even nice steel books sometimes. My husband and I have no issues with used copies. Shopping at second hand stores also helps me become aware of a lot of movies I wouldn't know about otherwise. I have before, but I have never really run into trouble as long as I buy from a larger store like Second Spin or some of the larger eBay stores that aren't Deep Discount (super unethical). I don't really buy used online because I have a large amount of second-hand stores near me that sell movies. I have never seen a local store without a decent return policy for movies in case it is damaged. Usually there are scratches on disks, but it's never that bad and you can just buff it out if it ever was too bad to watch. Blu-rays are always practically new and disks are never bad at all. That said, I barely ever find messed up cases. They pretty much never leave my shelf except for a couple hours to watch, so I practically never see the case. I don't care about case condition really, so that's not a huge deal to me. You can get a lot of killer deals if you're even slightly aware of the prices of stuff in addition to checking eBay before you buy.
